Curriculum Intent

A curriculum designed for Bellingham Middle School

Intent

At Bellingham Middle School, we ensure that our pupils enjoy a responsive, evolving curriculum that is rich in cultural exposure and underpinned by our school values of kindness, resilience and respect.  It is a curriculum which transcends the classroom and has firmly-rooted opportunities, designed to develop a deep appreciation for our beautiful, rural location.

Our curriculum equips our learners with new skills and knowledge, enabling them to read, write, reason and problem solve as we immerse them in challenging, artistic and creative learning opportunities.   These opportunities ensure that our learners have intrinsic values such as a healthy zest for life, a keen love of learning and demonstrate the confidence to excel.

We recognise that our school and local community are not hugely diverse, but that our children will live in a diverse society and we recognise our responsibility to ensure that they will be prepared to take their place in it.  Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development permeates the curriculum we provide, promoting a culture of acceptance and teaching our children to celebrate and welcome differences.

The development of emotional health, wellbeing and resilience, for both pupils and staff, remains an overarching priority and is central to the design of our curriculum.  We strive to ensure that all pupils in our school experience learning opportunities in which they feel safe, valued and supported, yet secure enough to face challenges, able to communicate their feelings and ideas with confidence.

Community involvement is an essential part of our curriculum.  We build a sense of community within our teaching, our year groups as well as across and beyond the school.   Our children develop emotionally, spiritually, morally and as members of their community, with the ability and desire to make a positive contribution to an ever-changing society.  Pupils leave our school with a sense of belonging to a tight-knit community, who achieve well academically, socially and personally, possessing the skills to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.
