Curriculum Intent

At Bellingham Middle School, we believe that all children can enjoy and succeed in mathematics. It is our goal to ensure that pupils are confident, resilient and fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics. We aim to deliver an inspiring and engaging curriculum, with high quality teaching and high expectations at the heart of our teaching and learning. In developing and using the mastery approach to teaching maths, all pupils can access the full curriculum and this ensures that they acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. We want their learning to prepare children to communicate and reason mathematically and solve problems by applying their mathematics across all areas of the curriculum.

Maths is the foundation for understanding the world and we want our children to know the purpose behind their learning and be able to apply that knowledge to their everyday life, both now and in the future. Our vision for children as mathematicians at Bellingham Middle, is that we want pupils to relish the challenge of maths and develop the necessary skills to make them ‘deep’ thinkers. They should be able to make connections between different areas of maths and be willing to take risks to further their learning, valuing mistakes as part of the learning process, rather than seeing them as failure. Through all these measures, we believe that all children can experience success in this subject and develop a curiosity as well as a respect and appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics.
