Science - Our aim

‘Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge’
Carl Sagan

At Bellingham Middle School we aim to harness the natural curiosity of all children and show them how to use the scientific method to answer questions about the world around them. We are fortunate to be able to teach science in a purpose built and well-resourced laboratory, and look to teach through hands-on, practical activities as much as possible.

Through our scientific studies at Bellingham Middle school we aim to:

  • Foster a sense of awe and wonder at the world around us
  • Encourage critical thinking and a questioning attitude
  • Show how science is the best way we have to answer questions about the world
  • Give children the tools to investigate those questions effectively
  • Give a secure understanding of current scientific thinking and knowledge as a sound foundation for further study.

We teach biology, physics and chemistry topics in all Years, with a focus throughout on the skills required for effective investigative science and an understanding of 'How Science works'. Children learn about the significant figures in the history of science and how these discoveries have helped to shape the modern world.

'Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is to not stop questioning'
