As part of their topic on Traditional Northern Folk Music, local and world-renowned musician Kathryn Tickell popped in to visit a Year 8 music lesson today. She listened to those brave enough to volunteer, play one of her own pieces Brafferton Village, which they are learning on keyboard. In return they heard, not only the back story to the piece - which she wrote one Christmas as a gift for family friends, but also Kathryn play the piece itself on her Northumbrian pipes.
Kathryn was impressed with several sets of the words that Year 8 pupils were writing to accompany the tune using the theme ‘Winter in Northumberland’ and particularly loved the references to our wild fells and life on the farm.
Year 8 were able to put some very interesting questions to her about her career, before singing the two traditional northern tunes of Bobby Shaftoe and Keel Row whilst Kathryn accompanied them on her fiddle.
A huge thank you to Kathryn for taking time out of her busy schedule to visit us.
